TREATING CHILD PAIN PROBLEMS
Child pain problems are often difficult to diagnose and treat. This should always start with a careful and thorough pediatric examination by your pediatrician or family doctor.
Pediatric psychologists with specialized training in child pain management strategies and treatment of psychosomatic disorders can also assist in the treatment and management of childhood pain syndromes.
Since children often have a limited ability to verbalize their feelings, childhood depression or anxiety can show itself in a pain syndrome. Traumatic experiences, family illness or death can make the child feel physicall vulnerable. Pediatric psychologists can help determine if underlying depression or anxiety are contributing to your child's pain problem.
Unfortunately, some children must cope with chronic pain from medical conditions such as juvenile arthritis, traumatic injuries, gastrointestinal disorders, or other medical conditions.
Psychologists can assist with specialized pain management techniques such as muscle relaxation, biofeedback and others to help reduce pain complaints. Combined with behavioral and cognitive-behavioral approaches, levels of distress can be reduced and functioning improved.
In consultation with the child's medical physician, pain medication may be able to be stabilized, reduced, or sometimes avoided or discontinued.
